Mannesmann AG the third largest industrial equipment maker in the world owns the largest cell phone company in Germany. Included in the application were briefs by the company officers and outside experts saying a combination of the two companies would be beneficial to customers and industry competition. The Monday edition of Germanys Der Spiegel reported the countrys finance minister could decide to sell off the German governments 22% stake in Deutsche Telekom a stake worth about 32 billion US dollars. According to analysts, if such a large chunk of the highly-valued company goes on the market, a leveraged buyout of the entire company can not be ruled out. Like most European telecoms, DT was once a government-owned monopoly. But over the years, the German government has been selling off portions of its Deutsche Telekom holding to the public. This is Softbanks first half-year loss since the company started releasing financial information in 1997. According to financial statements two Softbank properties Ziff-Davis and Kingston Technology were leading causes of the poor earnings result. Softbank controls 70% of Ziff Davis which posted 28 million dollars in red ink so far this year. Softbank bought control of Ziff-Davis for 2.1 billion dollars in 1995. Cutting its losses, struggling Kingston was divested by Softbank earlier this year. Analysts expect Ziff-Davis to meet a similar fate. To cut the losses, Softbank took profit from its Yahoo! holdings by selling off shares decreasing its control from 30% to 28%. Still revenue from the internet business dominated it Yahoo! Holding was 6.4 million.
