	Covad T1: No Comparison Andy Abramson and I did various tests with Skype, Gizmo Project, SightSpeed, and the Nokia N800 using our respective Covad T1s. We then switched to Andy's cable connection (through Cox, if memory serves), I stayed on the Covad line, and repeated the same tests. In all applications, you can tell the difference between the two. The Covad T1 line was the clear winner. The more I use my Covad T1 that I got from their Blogger Relations program, the more I realize that I am so going to miss it when I move to Gig Harbor in the next 6 weeks or so. It's not the speed--my cable modem downstream is certainly faster than the 1.5 mb/s I get from the T1. However, the bandwidth is consistent and predictable. The latency is much lower on the T1 than it is on either my Wave Broadband cable connection or my Qwest DSL line. There isn't any packet loss to speak of. It just works. Because I had to clear out my wiring closet due to some carpet repair that needed to occur, I switched the entire house over to the Covad T1 a little over a week ago. Other than to troubleshoot a connectivity issue that eventually resolved itself, I haven't looked back. Other than for large file downloads, I hardly notice the difference in my non-VoIP usage of the line. There's a clear difference when I start using my VoIP applications, especially on the video side. 	Powerless on Planes This is aideo rant on lack of laptop battery life, the airlines lack of power in seats (for those of us who have to fly coach anyway), and the fact the airlines won't do squat about it. This video cast is well-travelled. It was recorded on my Nokia E70 on United Flight 263 from Washington Dulles to Seattle. It was then bluetoothed over to my Nokia E62 (my E70's battery may not survive the trip either). Once I landed, it was sent via Cha-Chingular's "high-speed" EDGE network to blip.tv's servers. 	Why I'm Not Using SightSpeed to Video Blog--Yet I decided to record this video with SightSpeed instead of using iMovie, partially to make a point. SightSpeed doesn't offer enough control over the video process. Ken Camp alluded to some extra functionality coming to SightSpeed in his latest video blog posting. I did make a mistake in this video, though. You can save off the video stream if you so choose, which is what I did to post the video here. 	Why I'm Video Blogging In this video, I go into the reasons I am video blogging. For those who don't want to watch, I can summarize: I need to be less verbose when I talk. Short-form video forces me to be brief, which is something I do not have a lot of practice with. I can spend hours on a blog post, and I can talk someone's ear off. None of that works on a video blog post. You have to be short and to the point. I need the practice being short and to the point. Video blogging gives me a way to practice.
